Just saw your comment on my Vendetta post.
You're right. Alan Rickman originally wrote the novel as a critique on Thatcher-run England in the late 80s. But the Wachowski brothers updated some of the plot points while maintaining the English setting. The Avain Flu plot line is the most major. But the references to the Iraq War are also in there. It's sort of a hybrid.
